 Squirrel facts by exterminators

Gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) are medium sized arboreal or tree squirrels. Their back is grizzled dark to pale gray and may be tinted with reddish coloration on their hips, head and feet. Their tails and stomach are white to pale gray. In the north, both their ears and soles of their feet grow heavy fur during winter. Generally, there is no difference between males and females with respect to size or coloration.

Gray squirrels have two breeding seasons per year and most breeding occurs in December – February and May – June. Females can have two litters per year, one from each breeding season. Average litter sizes range from 2 – 3 individuals. The winter litter is generally smaller than the summer litter. Both sexes remain reproductively active throughout their lives. The squirrel easily adapts to whatever situation confronts them. The secret to their survival is how quickly they are able learn the ropes around the neighborhood. If there is no food available, the squirrel will travel for miles to find it and then set up his home nearby. Their nest, called a “drey”, is usually built high up in the trees. If no tree is available, the squirrel will build it in the next best thing, an attic.

Roof rats,(black rats), are slightly smaller than Norway rats. Unlike Norway rats, their tails are longer than their heads and bodies combined. Roof rats(R. rattus) are agile climbers and usually live and nest above ground in shrubs, trees, and dense vegetation such as ivy. In buildings, they are most often found in enclosed or elevated spaces such as attics, walls, false ceilings, and cabinets. The roof rat has a more limited geographical range than the Norway rat, preferring ocean-influenced, warmer climates. In areas where the roof rat occurs, the Norway rat might also be present.
Norway rats,(brown or sewer rats), are stocky burrowing rodents that are larger than roof rats. Their burrows are found along building foundations, beneath rubbish or woodpiles, and in moist areas in and around gardens and fields. Nests can be lined with shredded paper, cloth, or other fibrous material. When Norway rats(Rattus norvegicus) invade buildings, they usually remain in the basement or ground floor. Norway rats live throughout the 48 contiguous United States. While generally found at lower elevations, this species can occur wherever people live.
